Four things to know before you wear copper

It is solid, not plated.

This piece is worked from 99.9% pure copper, the same metal at the center as on the surface. Most "copper" jewelry online is a base metal with a spray-on finish that wears through in months. Ours has nothing to wear through. It will be copper on the day it arrives and copper in thirty years.

People have worn it this way for thousands of years.

Copper is one of the oldest metals humans ever shaped, and one of the oldest they chose to wear against the skin. Egyptian, Roman, and Ayurvedic records all describe it worn on the body, generation after generation. We do not make claims about why they kept coming back to it. We just make it the way they would recognize.

It is finished by hand, eight times, then never again.

Every piece is shaped and finished at our bench in New York, the way this workshop has done it since 1964. You will see faint hammer and tool marks if you look closely. Those are the signature.

It changes with you.

Solid copper develops a patina, a slow deepening of color that comes from skin, air, and time. No two pieces age the same way, so after a year yours will look like yours and nobody else's. Some customers polish theirs bright again. Most tell us they stopped wanting to.

A note from the bench

My parents opened this workshop in New York in 1964, and I grew up on a stool beside the bench. The rule in this room has never changed: if it says copper, it is copper, all the way through.

That rule costs us something. Solid 99.9% copper is expensive, slow to work, and unforgiving. A plated bracelet can be stamped out by a machine in seconds. Ours cannot. Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, one at a time, until the work is right.

What you are holding was made the way my parents made things, for the same kind of person. Someone who picks a thing up, feels the weight of it, and knows.

Materials & Care

Every piece is worked from solid 99.9% pure copper bar stock. No plating, no lacquer, no base metal. Copper naturally darkens with wear into a patina, and on some skin it can leave a faint green mark where metal and moisture meet. That is ordinary copper chemistry, and it washes off with soap. If you prefer the bright finish, rub the piece with a lemon-and-salt paste or a polishing cloth for a minute and it returns to new. Copper is soft compared to steel, so store it apart from harder jewelry.

On the day your piece arrives, take a magnet off your fridge and hold it to the metal. Copper is not magnetic, so nothing should happen. Will it leave a green mark on my skin?

On some skin, copper can leave a faint green mark where metal and moisture meet. That is ordinary copper chemistry, not a flaw and not plating wearing off, and it washes off with soap.

How do I bring back the bright finish?

Rub the piece with a lemon-and-salt paste or a polishing cloth for a minute and it returns to new. Many customers let the patina deepen instead. Either way the metal underneath is the same solid copper.
